unit formation

Postby London » Wed Jun 01, 2011 7:58 am

can I put my dire wolves in a formation of 4 in the front and two in the second rank? it just makes it easier to put them on a movement tray. I didn't find anything against it in the rule book yet.

I could be wrong, but I think you need to complete the first rank with 5 models if you have enough models to do so. When I use my Dire Wolves, I use the old movement trays and just dangle the last guy off the end.

Your front rank can be any number you could have a unit with one model in the front and twenty going straight back, you cannot get a rank bonus however unless you complete the front rank of five, or three for Monstrous infantry. Also i believe the dire wolves are fast cav and they can reform as many times as they want during a move as long as no model goes farther than its allowed.

You can form them up with any width you want. 4 models is ok. There is no limit in the rules.

You will want to make sure to have them in the formation that you'll want for the turn that they charge. But without at least 10 models, you dont need to be 5 wide to gain rank bonuses, so you can go with 4.

Another stipulation is that the second rank cannot be wider than the first rank, and if you want to add a third rank, the second rank must be as wide as the first and second ranks, and so on. So you could have a unit ranked up four and then two. If you had ten models, you could rank them four/four/two, but couldn't rank them four/two/two/two, because you can't add a third rank until the second one has four models in it.
