Kill-Team Sevastus

Post by Verbena76 » Tue Jan 01, 2019 7:53 pm

Kill-Team Sevastus is a hand-picked squad of Ultramarines specializing in stealth and scouting missions. They hail from the Third Company, and have been assembled by Brother-Captain Lucian Ovidius (formerly of the Deathwatch) for missions behind the lines on Vigilus.

Brother-Sergeant Sevastus is a grizzled veteran who has served the Ultramarines Chapter for centuries. His Tactical combat squad is joined by Brother-Intercessor Gaius and Brother-Reiver Appolon in their covert defense of Megaborealis. On truly dire missions, Brother-Librarian Agnathio joins the kill team.

Week 1 Fluff:

Brother-Librarian Agnathio settled into trans-human stillness as he cast the Emperor’s Tarot. The cards flicked against the top of the plascrete table, a steady metronome that helped still his mind. As he laid out the cards, a vision of the future started to take shape, a vision twisted and wracked by the Changer of Ways. Once the spread was completed, Agnathio breathed out once, and then examined the Tarot. What he saw confirmed his fears; the automaton sons of Magnus the Red were on the move in Megaborealis. He tapped his vox-bead and rumbled, “Brother-Sergeant Sevastus, head to sector Delta-419, and do whatever you have to do to disrupt the Archenemy there. Thousand Sons. Be vigilant. I suspect warp-rituals.”

“Acknowledged,” came Sevastus’s curt reply. “Deploying now.”

Agnathio smiled briefly; Sevastus was a noble veteran of the Ultramarines, but hadn’t fully accepted the need for the Primaris yet. His demi-squad was bolstered with an Intercessor, Brother Gaius, and a Reiver, brother Apollon, yet Sevastus treated them with polite disinterest. In the veteran sergeant’s mind, the standard Astartes had served Guilliman’s legacy perfectly well over the past ten millennia, thank you very much. Luckily, Gaius was a surprisingly gregarious soul, and Apollon responded to Sevastus with the same polite detachment.

Brother-Sergeant Sevastus of the first squad of the Third Company surveyed the loading dock with disgust, spotting the traitor Thousand Sons, just as Brother-Librarian Agnathio predicted. He ran through a variety of Codex-approved scenarios and deployments, but a single vox-click interrupted his musings. He looked up in annoyance at the Reiver, Apollon, who tapped his vambrace to reveal a digital wireframe of the loading dock. Blinking lights revealed where the Reiver wanted Sevastus’s brothers to deploy. Sevastus swallowed a curse, but his old friend Titus leaned in and studied the diagram for a second before nodding and saying softly, “While borderline Codex-compliant, I believe this is our most efficient deployment.”

Sevastus frowned as he leaned in and studied the diagram himself. He looked into the Reiver’s impassive skull-mask and grudgingly conceded, “Agreed. Brothers, we deploy in fifteen seconds.”

The battle was swift and Brother Castor fell to the Archenemy, but the Ultramarines disrupted the ritual and forced the Thousand Sons to retreat into the gloom of the loading dock. As they vanished, Sevastus looked around the profane altars and growled, “Burn it all.” He spared a nod of recognition to Brother Apollon, who returned the gesture solemnly. As the demi-squad undertook their grisly work, Sevastus scratched his beard and studied the tactical overlay Brother-Librarian Agnathio had sent to them. The overlay depicted cogitator-nodes containing Mechanicus-approved data-rituals needed to reinforce the Bastion shields protecting Megaborealis. As smoke filled the already choking air, Brother-Sergeant Sevastus gave the order to move out.

Wary of any reprisals from the Thousand Sons – physical or warp-based – Kill-Team Sevastus slipped into a disused sector of the lower hive structure and located the data-nodes. As they moved to secure the nodes and upload the data-rituals, the sharp bark of a bolter shattered the silence of the sector! Four black-clad Astartes with the livery of the Black Legion charged out of the darkness, howling praises to the Dark Gods. A brief firefight broke out as both sides closed to engage, but also to protect the cogitator-nodes. Brother-Varus was killed outright, and then Sevastus fell! Titus assumed command instantly and rallied the remaining brothers. As data flowed and bolt shots rained down, Titus charged the last remaining cogitator-node, only to be struck from behind by a Traitor Astartes! His vision blurred, but he kept pushing forward as the Black Legionnaire behind him snapped at his heels. He slammed his fist on the upload key, ignoring many Mechanicus-approved rituals, as he turned to face the Black Legionnaire. By then, two of the traitor’s kin had fallen but the remaining two fought like daemons.

Titus parried and thrust, only to have his strike deflected by the traitor’s silver pauldron. Titus blinked in surprise and dropped into a defensive stance as his foe rained down blow after blow. Thinking quickly, Titus howled the Catechism of Righteous Hatred over an open channel. The catechism triggered post-hypnotic anti-psyker protocols embedded deep in every Space Marine. It wasn’t enough to deny a witch’s power, but it might be enough to disrupt it.

As expected, the Black Legionnaire bin him took a step back, and then rippled to reveal a Deathwatch veteran! The Deathwatch Astartes did a double take on seeing Titus, and immediately voxed, “Hold fire! Maleficarum!” The second ‘Black Legionnaire’ immediately complied, and then his form rippled to reveal another Deathwatch veteran. Titus looked up at his attacker and said quietly, “We defeated a Thousand Sons warband recently. I suspect this is their revenge. You appeared as Black Legionnaires.”

The veteran nodded slowly and murmured, “We thought you were Alpha Legion.”

Both sides disentangled and pulled back. Titus arranged a hasty agreement to share the uploaded data before retreating. Brother-Sergeant Sevastus regained consciousness an hour later, and was incensed about the situation. Titus knew his brother was angrier at the deception, but the death of Brother Varus was a worrisome blow.

***

The following day, the depleted Kill-Team Servastus came across a residential hub with another series of cogitator nodes. Seeking to supplement their uploaded data for the Bastion shields, the kill team advanced, only for an angry binharic blurt to cause them to drop into Codex-approved defensive positions. A swarm of unfamiliar Skitarii in blue robes suddenly poured from every building, and booby traps collapsed one hab on top of Brother Titus! Without time to determine of the Skitarii were also under maleficarum, Kill-Team Sevastus advanced and opened fire. Brother-Sergeant Servastus and Brother Promethor held down the east flank, while Brothers Apollon and Gaius went up the west and center respectively. The Ultramarines managed to get the upper hand, but the cogitator nodes were heavily damaged in the firefight and melee. Dragging the heavily wounded Titus clear, the Ultramarines fought the Skitarii to a stalemate and fell back smartly.
