Church of healing
A death guard backstory for kill teams.

The bustling hive world of Targus was a beautiful world dedicated to argiculture for the Imperium. A world of fertile fields and landscapes now reduced to ash and rubble after the great discovery.

Sources speak of the great discovery as a result of the constant digging and reshaping of the land. Unbeknownst to the citizens of hive city Mol their city stood upon an ancient network of tunnels and catacombs from an age long ago. The city was hit by a seismic earthquake that shook and cracked the earth revealing tunnels leading deep into the earth crust.

Teams of excavation went into these tunnels in search of answers to who or what build these tunnels and most important, why? For years teams continue into what became known as a labyrinth of tunnels leading to an undergroujd catacomb. There were no signs of life anywhere but over the years more and more teams began to disappear as they dug deeper.

The first team to discover the powers of the old one discovered a black cauldron still boiling from an unknown heat source. Without knowing the true nature of the cauldron they took a sample of the cauldron back to the surface. The black tar like ichor though foul smelling and tasted worse than an orks behind had magicial properties to cure any ailment, disease and even regrow missing appendages.

Word spread quickly and when it got out that the citizens of Mol had a magical cure all remedy the sick and the ill from all over the planet flocked the hive city. The people of Mol went from underclass citizens to the dominate city of the planet. Riches and fortunes befell the great city and the construction of the church of healing began. At the head of the church was Mulgh, the archbishop who without realizing it was becoming influence by a dark entity as time went on. Bit by bit the populations of Mol abandoned the imperial creed in favor for the church. Eventually the churchs influence spread throughout the entire planet and those who were against the church was excommunicate and label a heretic.

When the word finally reached Terra of an imperial world that has turned its back against them the inquisition was sent to investigate. Word takes a long time to travel in the 41st millennium so when the imperial forces finally arrived to the planet Taragus everything became a hellish landscape. The world was in ruin and desolation as the people fled from beast that were once members of the church.

The cauldron they discovered belong to a greater unclean one and a secret cult of nurgle. What at first appeared to be a blessing and a gift from the old god as was in reality horrible twist of fate. They no longer suffer from disease pain or discomfort but their bodies underwent horrible mutations that left some as mindless beast or for those who somehow held on to their sanity horrible cycoplean beings with fangs.

The Inquisition had arrived too late to save the citizens or the planet as Nurgle's clutches had taken over the heart and soul of the people. The high council of the church along with the arch bishop himself forsaw the inquisition intervention and prepared an escape fleet. When the inquisition arrived the church was long abandon to the beasts that roam the hive city of Mol.

Mulgh and his church clergy throughout the decades of war and pestilence managed to earn the favor of nurgle. After countless guerilla warfare ambuses and with the blessing of Nurgle the Church of healing has been spreading the good word of the old god.

Church of healing
Week 1

1st Game
Death Guard vs Orkz

The Church of Healing descent into the spiraling city landscapes of the planet Vigilus was greeted with open arms. Following the visions of Grandfather Nurgle Archbishop Mulgh lead a vanguard of church members to an endless warfare fought between imperial and xenos alike. As their drop pods fell through the war torn smog atmosphere the members saw the signs of engagements raging everywhere. The kill team managed to weather the small arms fire and explosive rockets only to realize that their burning descent was seen by the Greenskins as a welcoming chance for more loot.

The Archbishop's team barely had anytime to assess the situation before the sounds of engines revving, loud low gothic shouts and the all familiar Waaaaaaaagh! was surrounding them. Once again the Greenskins, for a race of simple brutes, had somehow managed to set up an ambush for the church. The monks of salvation barely had time to shuffle from their transport before the Greenskins were upon them. The brothers of the old held steadfast and held back the greentide with bubonic bolter rounds but the numbers of the greentide couldn't be pushed back.

With crude cleavers they hacked and cleaved most of the monks before their braindead bodies had time to react. The sudden rush caught even the Archbishop himself off guard when he was ambushed by a hidden kommando. Mulg's bodyguard the Deacon and The Pastor were rushing forward to push back the orkz to protect Mulg when during the chaos somehow an ork had slipped by.

The kommando attack was quick when the ork found an slit in the archbishop helmet's and shoved a crude blade into his neck. Thinking he would bleed out and die the ork escaped before his bodyguards knew what was going on. The ambush was overwhelming even for the soliders of the plague god forcing them to fall back into the neighboring city to regroup.

Luckily for them the orks attention shifted elsewhere to some other potential threat when a loud explosion off in the wasteland caught their attention. And just as soon as they appeared the mechanized orks scurried back to their ramshackle vehicles in search for another fight.

2nd Game
Death Guard Vs Tyranids

The Church could feel the bitter sting of defeat by the Orkz as their resolve was being tested but they would not falter. The ambush by the orkz was more superfical and flash. The death toll was low as only the lowest ranking members of the church met their end but their sacrifice for the greater good brought time for them to fall back.

The hidden dangers of Vigilus wasn't over yet and the church soon found themselves in a broken down city taken over by the Hivemind. Archbishop team barely had time to lick their wounds and recover from the ork attack before the hivemind sent out a greeting party for them. The city was a nestground for breeding as pools of green acid littered the area. The streets were filled with burrowing tunnels and entire buildings knocked over and repurposed for the Hive.

When they entered the city the Archbishop began to suffer from a headacr as he felt a disconnect between him and his patron deity. The whispers in his head that has been guiding his hand ever since the first encounter back on Planet Targus had suddenly stopped. The attack began on the streets but quickly turned into a brutal close quarters brawl in a communications tower in the center that somehow remained untouched. The area was abandon but throughout the tower were symbols of a gold star with eight points.

The rising tower provided a nice defensive position for the assaulting bugs. The cement walls provided perfect choke points for the church's heavy flamer along with the Deacon and Pastor each standing their ground fighting back the onrush of claws and fangs. The two high priest held sacred weapons of the old that made short work of the new threat. One high priest was armed with a flail dipped into a greater unclean cauldron and the other held a great cleaver that despite its rustic appearance was unnaturally strong and capable of cutting through a loyalist armor with ease. They fought on and despite wounds that would cut a normal marine down they fought back showing no signs of fatigue or pain.

The battle was so overwhelming the church members climbed the tower itself and with chants of the faithful in unison they unleashed a barrage of blight grenades. Everything caught in the blast was hit by a torrent of filth and diseases from all over the galaxy. Eventually the new foe moral broke as entire groups collasped in horrible sickness. As the battle began to turn the rest of the creatures of the hive fled back to the shadows.

When the battle was over and the silence returned to the city did the church discovered that the communications tower they were entrenched in was functioning still.

3rd Game
Death Guard vs Black Legion

When the tower communication was back to full power and operating a strange broadcast filled the radio room. At first it began as just odd noises and loud static but the recording had a very dark erratic undertone. There were too many voices at one time or a loud screeches only hear from a death rattle. Too many noises to really make out the recording but like a chant they could hear clearly the phrase "we are returned" over and over.

After a few days of reconning and scanning the broadcast the church managed to locate where it was coming from. The messsage was not coming from a single source but from the overhead display on the screenthe entire planet flashed with a dozens sigils. Somehow whoever was responsible for the recording had taken deep root throughout the planet as the planet was blinking with sigils.

One of the sigil flashed the brightest came from an abandoned prison to the criminals of planet Vigilus.it was to the south of the city that days ago was taken over by the hivefleet. Unsure if this new group would be friendly or hostile Mulg decided to not risk it and sent out a recon team to scout out the area but advised any hostile actions, simply recon. Maybe he could find some new members to join his church was Mulghs thought ashe needed some more intel in order to figure out why Nurgle has guided his team to this planet. Maybe whoever made the recording could answerr some questions.

When his first recon team never came back from their scouting mission Mulgh realize that these strange broadcasts were more of a trap to the locals so whoever it was that hid in the shadows could ambush and steal their resources. If these ambushers have been at this for some time Mulgh considered they must have stocked a good amount of resources and ammuniton that the church could use to spread the old faith.

When Mulg's kill team arrived at the prison they saw that a company of black and gold armored marines brandishing a eight pointed star, similar to the towers symbol, patroling the entrance. A gathering of cultist and troopers had taken over and fortified the prison and they seemed to be gathering the local populations for some dark ritual in the courtyard. Rows and rows of helpless slaves laid chained together to form a star. In the center stood a dark hooded figure going on with a ritual knife slicing open throats as the floor became slick with blood chanting from a tome.

The prison was filled with the sounds of sorrow and despair as the natives cried out for a savior to saved them from this hellish cult. Heralding the sounds of salvation the bells of nurgle began to toll as the death guard marched upon the black legion with righteous might. In response to the tolling bells the legion answerred back with heavy bolter rounds.

A battle erupted as the black legion were heavily entrenched yet the brothers of the old along with their monks marched through relentless firepower with grim determination. Their new foe couldn't muster the firepower to break the church's relentless march and soon found themselves on the retreat. The church's firepower was too much once when the blight grenades and blight launchers came into range. Their owned defensive positions ended up becoming their graves when the blight grenades life eatter virus burst and began to rot away everything in it's radius.

The local natives were saved from one horrible fate only to discover that the salvation that they cried out for wasn't exactly what they thought. Yes their pain and suffering all ended but now their bodies and soul belong to the God of the Old.
