A Tale of Four Gamers- Kevin Wall (Tzeentch Daemons)

Postby Inquisitor Wall » Sat Jan 02, 2010 5:19 pm

I will write up a longer introduction with pics this evening, or tomorrow. For now my painting schedule.
Jan: 2 Heralds of Tzeentch, 10 Horrors (converted and painted)
Feb: Greater Daemon of Tzeentch (moved to Feb to accommodate vacation)
March: 20 Horrors (Converted and painted)
April: 20 Horrors (Converted and Painted)
May: 20 Horrors (Converted and painted)
June: End of school year, no progress or catch up on what is not done
July: 12 Flamers ( this should have the army completed by July)

Depending on how I feel about the army, I will add some more units just for fun.

sounds like you got everything well thought out and I can't wait to see the army. Let me know if you want to get any practice games in with them. Come February Beasts will be out and I plan on doing a lot of play testing with them.

INTRODUCTION:

So I have been a huge fan of Tzeentch since I first started playing Warhammer nearly 12 years ago. I liked the subtle aspect of Tzeentch compared to the other chaos factions, but I really did not like the horror models that were out at the time. They were the big nosed ones, that split from 1 pink horror into 2 blue horrors whenever you killed one, so I went with Tzeentch in 40K. I focused on Thousand Sons since they were cool. 2 wounds each and could not be hurt by S4 or less weapons. They were all single pose one piece metal models, but soon (late in 3rd ed) they came out with the metal/plastic kits and I was good to go. Made a 2500 point list out of the new kits, and I converted a bunch of Gray Knight termies to match since they were the biggest termies around at the time. Also around this time, forgeworld released their first giant sized greater daemon (the Bloodthirster). I told my self then that the day they came out with the Lord of Change I would buy one.
Well years passed, Thousand Sons became the absolute worst army in the game during 4th ed, so I sold them off along with all of the flamers, screamers, and new sculpts of the horrors I had.
But when Forgeworld released the new Lord of change model, it was time once again to become a follower of Tzeentch.

BEGINNING THE ARMY:

So first off I had to get the lord as a general for my army.

With him assembled and ready to go, it was time to begin focusing on the rest of the army. Wanting to keep to an all Tzeentch theme made my army choices simple. There is one core unit, 1 special, and one rare option. I had already done 40 or so horrors when I did Thousand Sons, so I wanted to create my own horrors. I used ghoul and chaos spawn kits and embarked on the 70+ horrors I will need for the army.

Now that the horrors have been started, next was time to work on heroes. Again I am limited to only heralds, and GW does not make them, so I made my own.

I am not sure of how to make flamers at the moment, so I will have to wait and continue searching.

Here is the army as it stands on 1/3/10 (20 horrors made, 2 heralds, and Lord of Change)

I literally got the shivers looking at that Lord of Change. How come your pics look so much better than the FW ones? Is it because it's not painted yet, and I could see all the detail?

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.

The detail is tremendous compared to the pics on the forgeworld site. I think the main difference is the detail in the wings. On the website, they look very flat.

Having already gotten a game in against this army, and seeing it up close, the pictures of the Lord of Change on the FW site are simply terrible. That model is actually considerably more beautiful than I gave it credit for.

Also, Kevin's Horrors look really good. The ghoul conversions came out amazing.

I have to say, your tale of your love hate relationship with Tzeentch is very similar to mine, though you've been playing longer.

Back in 3rd ed I was about to build a 90% Tz Daemon army with the CSM book, (using two squads of Tsons as iconbearers) but by the time they got around to it, the new 4.9th ed book came out and squished my dreams...

A few more months went by and the daemon codex/armybook came out and I have to say, for once, Tzeentch didn't get the shaft in either situation.

I have to say that Loc in your pics makes me almost want to get one... almost.

Love the horrors, if you look at them individually you can't really tell they're "horrors" (my first thought was chaos spawn or mutants from the LaTD) but when they're with thier unit, it becomes apparent, and dare I say striking.

For your heralds, did you use Empire wizards as a base? I need to make a few heralds for fantasy, and that is the only GW model that I would do, (and then I gotta give all 3 of them wings.. ugh)

I see you got the Galeforce 9 wood trays, how do you feel about them, I couldn't get anyone's oppinion on them when I was shopping around (and the shipping on them was insane at the time) so I made mine with LoTR ones, its a bit more work, but I'm happy with the results.

Lastly, for flamers, You could use the burning dryads (I use them for "screamers" but only cause I already had flamers) method:

So far loving it.

Thanks Carl for your comments. I am very pleased with the horrors as well. They have been very fun to make so far.

For the heralds, I used the High elf mage kit. I was going to go with the empire wizards, but I liked the flame base that came with them. I also felt the robes were more dynamic. I might go with empire wizards if I do more heralds.

The GF9 trays are decent, but again are too wide. I am going to be sanding them down to make them a closer fit, but they will still be 1/4 -3/8" wider than I would like. I admit that the only reason I used them, was I knew I would be too lazy to make them out of the WoTR trays. The individual model spacing is pretty close to the same.

I really like the burning dryad route you went with for the flamers. I am still at a loss on how to make them. I was toying with the idea of using chaos warriors with flaming hands and skulls, but not overly excited. I might try empire wizards, but want something beefier to represent the S5. Reaper makes some amazing flaming soldiers, but I would like to keep the army usable in a GW event. My biggest issue is I cant sculpt green stuff well, and GW is very limited on flaming bits.

I hope to get some more pictures up soon. Heralds should be done by Sunday.
